Makeup is about color. Color I believe is the greatest joy of life. Color gives energy to everything it touches. Each color has energy & gives every story & look a mood & life. Every aspect of life involves color – Fashion, Art, Technology, Couture Houses, Design, Nature, gift boxes, Architecture, & so on.
Although the world is filled with color, limited information & literature is available of color. Since color is very emotional & personal, it has been a Task to Trend Forecast Makeup color stories year after year. Even in the modern consumer world, makeup looks are created after Fashion have designed fashion looks following color forecasts delivered by Color Forecasting Agencies. These agencies are set up as to unburden Fashion & color Cosmetic manufacturers to decide the color & expenditure attached to the process.
Even though manufacturers, designers have put great confidence in these agencies & feel safer following prescribed trends, I feel Artistes & Beauty Business Entrepreneurs have lost their ability to trust their own judgment to forecast color. Since the agencies sell the same forecasting reports globally, manufacturers across the world produce SIMILAR products, so as to follow the trend story.
While the trend stories are great because it gives our industry a direction & helps us understand & acknowledge the role of a color within the fashion world, as a professional. I feel makeup artists can never afford to become a Trend Addicts. Because it goes against the very nature or the religion of Color, color must be LIBERATING & NOT restricting. As a result, promotions or trend reports can only Influence & not Dominate.
As makeup artists we have a responsibility to represent trends & use them in a way which is positive, progressive & enhancing but never at the clients’ cost of taking away our representation of trends. If we follow trends blindly without personalizing the look, & if the trends are allowed to dictate us, creativity will hinder the scope of our Art.
There will only be Mechanical sales but no Qualitative growth within Makeup Industry. Professional will seize to become Consultants & Artistes. We must therefore, never forget that the client’s need & requirements must guide us equally when designing a Trend look for them.
